Cuisine: American

About: **CLOSED** 50 Plates is a restaurant showcasing the cuisine of the American tradition. Of memories real or imagined of grandmothers' pies, state fair fries, of date shakes and cheese steaks; a Kentucky bourbon fueled culinary road-trip beyond Route 66, from Smithfield Hams to Ipswich Clams. 50 Plates is the best of red states, blue plates, and everything in between.

What does the PickSomewhere Crew think?

UPDATE: We are sad to learn this Crew Pick Fav has closed its doors. We wish the owners the best of luck in their next adventure.

So Holly and I decided to take our work session downtown to enjoy happy hour and do research. After deliberating for a bit, we decided to try 50 Plates.

And I’m glad we did.

We sat at the bar (which I do have to note was not at a convenient height to work on our computers, but then again, it  IS a bar) and had pretty much one on one service with the bartender (Caitlyn) who, not only made a killer martini, was also very helpful in letting me know what I could eat. At the time I was gluten and dairy free, which can seriously limit one’s choices.

I ended up having the iceberg lettuce wedge and rosemary fries.

*On a side note: I’ve been on a Dirty Martini kick lately and every place I eat at (with full bar) I order an “extra dirty martini, and when the bartender thinks it’s dirty enough, have them add even more olive juice.” So if you love it dirty, go here.

The fries were cleverly served up in a paper bag and where crispy on the outside and full of soft potatoey goodness. The lettuce wedge was as expected. The only way to really screw one of those up is to have limp lettuce. Holly ended up having (and really enjoying) the free endless “cup of popcorn” with dill and parmesan. Sadly, I only got to smell it.
